Welcome, Writer!

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Repeat after me, “I am a writer.”

You must say this even if you’ve only seen your name in print at the top of a homework assignment for English class.

That does not matter.

We must begin to see ourselves as writers.

Once we can say, “ I am a writer,” we can start doing what writers do. We can begin putting words on paper or a screen.

This is one of the first things I learned during my work with the National Writing Project.

We went on a *writing marathon in Lake Tahoe, no less, and everywhere we went we were told to say we were writers and then sit down and write.

Try this.

Saying the phrase out loud could change the way you see yourself. It helped change me.

*Inspired by Goldberg’s book above.
